| Volunteering: The animals need you! The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society encourages the participation of volunteers who support our mission: to reduce animal suffering by curbing overpopulation, teaching compassion, and supporting healthy relationships between people and animals. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society maintains an active volunteer program which is an integral part of our daily operations. Our devoted team of 200-plus volunteers spends thousands of hours every year helping to care for the animals. Whether you wish to volunteer by spending time directly with the animals, by teaching humane principles to children, or any number of other volunteer opportunities, we and the animals welcome your help. To see a list of current volunteer needs please click here. All volunteers begin by attending a three-hour fun-filled orientation designed to acquaint you with what our Shelter is all about. Depending on the type of volunteer work you would like to do there are additional training opportunities. Volunteer Guidelines: 1. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old. Volunteers between 12 and 15 years old must be supervised by a parent or legal guardian while volunteering. Both the parent and child must submit applications. 2. Volunteers are asked to make a six-month commitment of about two hours a week. How to get started: 1. Fill out an application online, by clicking here. If your availability and interests fit with open volunteer positions, we'll contact you to schedule you for a volunteer orientation. 2. Attend orientation. Each volunteer attends a three-hour orientation where we provide an overview of our services, an introduction to our volunteer program, a review of safety issues and a tour of the shelter. 3. Depending on the type of volunteer work you are interested in, there will be additional training required. The Volunteer Coordinator will get you signed up for the right training. Shelter Foster Families We need foster families! Our foster families care for animals that aren’t ready for adoption. Most foster placements are two to six weeks, and are for nursing mothers and their litters, young kittens, puppies, injured pets or animals needing socialization or time away from the shelter. Our New Hope Program, which encompasses fosters, transfers and rescues, truly offers a second chance to so many wonderful animals.
