Brigitte is a sweet American Short Hair. She loves to get into you face for affection. This energetic, playful cat likes to explore her surroundings with all the enthusiasm she can muster. She gets along great with cats and humans.
This British Short Hair is good with children, and grown ups a like. She is so sensitive she will come to comfort you when you are crying. Her favorite food is tuna, but she isn't picky. She would do best as an only cat.
Sylvie is an energetic, sweet German Shepherd looking for someone to give her a stable, loving home. She would like an active lifestyle that will give her lots of exercise. She would do best as an only dog, but in return will give more love than a whole pack.
Buddy is a full grown Mastiff/Labrador Retriever mix. He is a staff favorite because of his sweet eyes and loving personality. He needs an active lifestyle filled with exercise, but also likes to cuddle and be loved. He is gentle with small dogs, so if you have a dog at home, bring it in to meet him.

ACCESS ROAD CLOSED Road construction sparks detour
Construction on NM 599 (the Bypass Highway) has temporarily closed CR 62, our main access route to the Shelter. Drivers now must use CR 70 to access the frontage road and Caja del Rio Road. CR 70 is 2.3 miles north of CR 62.
Drivers from the south-side of town may also utilize the short-cut on the frontage road from Airport Road. On Airport, cross NM 599 to Country Drive. Turn right on Paseo De River and follow the road across the arroyo until it connects with the frontage road. Continue north until Caja del Rio Road. Follow the signs to the Shelter.
Thank you for your patience. Construction of the new interchange at CR 60 and NM 599 will eliminate the hazards of crossing the busy highway.
HELPING HAND Shelter rescues 8 mama cats, 35 kittens from overwhelmed T or C resident
More than 40 stray cats and kittens are getting a chance at healthy lives and forever homes thanks to the quick efforts of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter.
The Shelter recently took in eight mama cats and 35 kittens from one home in Truth or Consequences after the homeowner became overwhelmed with the care of the stray cats that had entered his property. The man initially reached out to a rescue group that urged him to contact the Shelter.
The Shelter was able to offer a hand thanks to Santa Fe’s own efforts in reducing the community’s feline population through spaying and neutering and its progressive treatment of free-roaming cats, said Mary Martin, the Shelter’s executive director. “Our community has worked hard on spaying and neutering animals in the past five years,” she said. “That effort has put us in a position where we can help other communities.”
SPOTLIGHT ON OUR PARTNERS Wilbur becomes a wonder dog at Santa Fe Tails!
Santa Fe Tails Dog Academy & Daycare goes out of its way to help Shelter animals in need. Here’s more on the business:
Wilbur’s story is one of commitment, confidence and success.
All dogs that come to board or attend day care at Santa Fe Tails must first pass a temperament evaluation to see if they are appropriate candidates. Sometimes, those dogs that do not pass the evaluation are put into the Santa Fe Tails’ social program. Frequently these dogs are overwhelmed, fearful and lack social and communication skills because of little or no dog-to-dog interaction.
The social program consists of a one-hour training session with Joey or Hannah in a controlled setting tailored to each dog’s particular needs. Sometimes it just takes one or two sessions before the dog is ready to attend regular day care, but it can take longer — as in Wilbur’s case.

WE DID IT! Thank you for helping us qualify in The Challenge!
It’s official! Thanks to you, we’re in the ASPCA $100K Challenge. We maintained our 19th position in the nation – fourth in our region – with 12,251 votes.
That’s something to celebrate!
This is only our first step toward engaging the community in the Challenge, but it’s a BIG one! Hats off to you, your friends, family and all supporters who care so much about our work at the Shelter.
Stay tuned for more details about our plans to save more lives. We'll be working hard this summer connecting even more families with wonderful animals and competing with 50 other shelters.
The Santa Fe Animal Shelter’s Spay/Neuter & Wellness Clinic is offering $5 for those making an appointment and bringing in unaltered outdoor cats for sterilization.
The goal behind the Fix a Feline, Get Five Bucks incentive is to get a head-start on the feline breeding season, said Mark Young, the clinic’s manager. Those with outdoor cats or those willing to trap feral felines and return them to their colonies fall under the campaign’s guidelines.
“We want to sterilize as many felines as possible,” Young said. “If we have to pay people $5 to help offset the cost of driving here, then that’s what we’ll do.”
People must make appointments for fixing the felines, Young said. Traps for catching feral felines are available at the clinic with a $50 fully refundable deposit. The free-living or feral cats fall under the shelter’s Gatos de Santa Fe program, which offers care for community cats.
For more information or to make an appointment for feline sterilization, call the clinic at 474-6422.

BUT BABY IT’S COLD OUT THERE Help keep our Shelter dogs warm!
Do you have some extra blankets or large towels that you no longer need? We’re making every effort possible to keep our dogs warm and comfortable but unfortunately we’re running short of blankets and long towels, such as beach or long bath towels.
If you have these items on hand, consider donating them to us (no sheets, please). Please drop them off at either the Receiving or Adoption Building at the Shelter or at our resale store, Look What the Cat Dragged In, 2570 Camino Entrada. The Shelter dogs will thank you for it, and so will we!
Schools, groups and individuals sponsor many of our homeless animals to make sure they have a good chance at finding a forever home. That means their adoption fee is PAID!
Come meet the sponsored animals at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and make the bond of your life! Check out a new sponsored animal daily on our Facebook page.

An Albuquerque website devoted to dogs has pitched in $500 to help find those responsible for mutilating a puppy in February and leaving him to die.
The reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction to those responsible for abusing Petie has now grown to $8,000. The 6-week-old puppy was found bloodied, freezing and nearly dead Feb. 2, on the side of the road in La Cienega. The pup’s ears had been mostly chopped off, and he had been left to die in the cold night.
He was taken the Santa Fe Animal Shelter where he received immediate care and has since recovered. The puppy, who spent time healing in a foster family, was adopted earlier this month by a local family.
ABQDOG’s $500 boosts the reward offered by the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Animal Protection of New Mexico to $8,000.
Anyone with information regarding the crime are urged to call the New Mexico Attorney General’s Animal Cruelty Hot Line at 877-5HUMANE (877-548-6263). Callers may remain anonymous.
Please feel free to download posters about Petie and post them in your neighborhood. English. Spanish.
NATIONAL SPAY DAY Crowds gather for free spaying-neutering event
More than 100 dogs, cats and even a rabbit were spayed or neutered for free Tuesday as part of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter’s annual Spay Day celebration.
People started lining up as early as 5 a.m. at the Shelter’s south-side clinic with their precious cargo tucked in their arms, on leashes or in carrying cases. Shelter workers also handed out more than 50 vouchers for low-cost spaying and neutering when the day’s surgery quota was met around 8:30 a.m.
The turnout was incredible, said Mary Martin, the Shelter’s executive director, and underscores the need for such events. The cost of the surgeries was underwritten by the Shelter’s generous contributors.
Once a month, SFAS&HS takes to the airwaves on KSFR's Santa Fe Radio Cafe with Mary-Charlotte Domandi. We take on a variety of subjects of interest to animal lovers of every stripe. Check out earlier episodes here, or listen again!
PETSMART CHARITIES® RESCUE WAGGIN’® Sending homeless dogs for the ride of their lives
Every year, our Shelter receives more dogs and cats than we can possibly find homes for in our community.
That’s why we’re constantly looking for new spay/neuter strategies to reduce the number of pets coming in, while at the same time developing innovative programs that help us get more pets adopted out.
Our goal is to find every adoptable pet a loving home, so we have partnered with the PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’® program to increase the number of adoptable dogs and puppies that find new families.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS Certified pet dog trainers make a difference!
Not every dog in our adoption kennels is perfect. In fact, like us humans, hardly any of them are. But, like us, they can get along pretty well if they have someone to love them and take care of them.
Certified pet dog trainers are there to help you and your furry companion. The following trainers were instrumental in helping the Shelter create its Humane Dog Walking program:
